HAIR FIBER CYCLE
Did you know that your haircut can help clean up waterways?
We create natural fiber mats from hair and fur fibers, which adsorb oil from the environment and improve soil growing conditions.
In Finland alone, 450,000 kilos of hair fiber are burned as waste each year. It is literally "wasted." We want to change this and explore the possibilities of this valuable material.

1
Ota talteen kaikki yli 5 cm Long hair, whether treated or untreated, should be collected while ensuring that short hairs are not mixed in. The easiest way is to tie the hair into small ponytails before cutting. Hair salons and individuals can send the hair to the collection point in Lahti in a large envelope (maximum size 25 cm x 35.3 cm x 3 cm). Please note that postal pickup as a package is not available. Thank you very much for your support!

2
Include your company name with the shipment, and we will add you to our website as a partner. All participating businesses will receive collaboration stickers. The Regional Collection Points section lists hair industry professionals across Finland where you can pick up stickers and get more information. New businesses interested in joining the collection initiative are also welcome to participate.

The Story of Hiukkahyvä
The journey of Hiukka Hyvä began with a desire to create a more sustainable hairdressing industry and utilize its byproducts through circular economy principles. Helsinki-based entrepreneur, hair designer, and artist Miila Hyökki – founder of Kuutio Galleria – has been passionate about the well-being of our planet since childhood. After completing her specialized eco-hairdresser certification in 2019, she wanted to take steps toward making the hairdressing industry more sustainable.
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 provided Miila with more time to reflect and develop new ideas. She had heard about the ability of felted hair mats to absorb oil from the environment and wanted to explore the topic further. The pandemic further strengthened her awareness of planetary resilience and its crucial role in our collective well-being.
Miila’s research led her to Matter of Trust , a U.S.-based organization pioneering the production of hair fiber mats through its Clean Wave program. The organization had extensive research on the mats' ability to absorb petrochemicals from the environment and waterways, aiming to use them for environmental protection and pollution control.
Discussions with Clean Wave resulted in Miila signing a collaboration agreement with them in the summer of 2020. As a result, the organization provided Miila with a hair fiber mat felting machine—the first of its kind in the Nordic region.
To give the project a strong start in Finland, Miila began identifying potential partners. Through acquaintances, Miila found Painovoiman, a circular economy hub for the creative sector. Painovoima has extensive experience in utilizing industrial byproducts and implementing circular economy projects. Another key partner in the initiative was LAB Muotoiluinstituuttiwhich was excited about the opportunity to explore the potential of repurposing hair and fur fibers.
After piloting and testing, the partners decided to join forces and launch the felting operation in Lahti. Since Lahti was designated European Green Capital 2021, it funded various environmental projects, both large and small. Hiukka Hyvä also received funding as part of the Green Lahti initiative.
With this support, operations officially began in February 2021. Hair salons and pet groomers were encouraged to join as "Hair Fairies" and "Fur Sponsors", contributing their industry byproducts to be repurposed into new materials. As part of the circular economy chain, partner businesses help protect the environment and spread awareness about the reuse of hair and fur fibers.
In September 2021, LAB University launched the 2.0 follow-up project, expanding research on hair and other organic fibers as potential substitutes for plastic.
The Future Vision for Hiukka Hyvä The long-term goal is to integrate hair and grooming industry byproducts into the circular economy as efficiently as possible. By using hair fiber mats, we can help keep the environment and waterways cleaner. Hiukka Hyvä aims to become a social enterprise, creating green and sustainable jobs while promoting the well-being of our planet.
PROJECTS
HIUKKA 2.0 – Hair and Other Organic Fibers as a Substitute for Plastic

The project's goal is to explore the potential of hair and fur fibers as substitutes for plastic-based solutions, highlighting the substitution benefits of organic fibers. The initiative aims to create new opportunities for repurposing materials that are currently treated as waste, following circular economy principles by refining and utilizing them in new product innovations. Additionally, the project seeks to enhance local businesses' understanding and expertise in circular economy-based business models. One key aspect is examining existing business models (including product design and marketing communications) and conducting a regional comparative analysis to identify Päijät-Häme’s competitive strengths, which can be leveraged both nationally and internationally. By increasing knowledge about the potential of hair and fur fibers, developing circular economy business expertise, and integrating these insights into education, the project lays a strong foundation for new business opportunities and job creation.
